Why I hate subscription based MMOs

Subscription MMOs… Such great games like FFXIV and WoW use this model to finance themselves, but, is it actually good?

No.

Why? Cause there’s a slight problem… Most sub-based MMOs require you to buy DLCs, and don’t forget the cosmetic shop. All of this of course is to “cover the costs of severs”.

“Buh-muh, subscriptions are actually justified due to server prices!” - nope,

We’re not living in 2000s anymore, and bandwidth with hardware prices have fallen drastically since then, so the subscription isn’t justified in modern day. For example, there’s Guild Wars 2, which actually doesn’t have a Pay2Play model, and insteads is Buy2Play - with the same cosmetic shop, where you can buy stuff.

And guess what? Their servers don’t have long maintenance, and they’re updating them smoothly, not by shutting down everything but by gracefully “closing” old instances, and if players tries to enter a instance, which uses fresh update - it will not kick you out, but tell that you need to update your client to access that area, and like, you can actually finish your shit at the time you need to do it

Plus, with Guild Wars Reforged - Steam support is pretty good now, as you can redeem Hall of Monuments rewards even if you bought the game through Steam. But yeah, Steam players are still left without gem codes, which is still a big hit - but, at least you don’t need to have a PhD to give the company your money, cause to buy a DLC you only have to press buy on Steam (or ANet website, if you have their account).
